Highest Bridge Bungee In The World. Diabetes Can’t Stop Us.
We bungee jumped the highest bridge bungee in the world in South Africa! It was an experience that I will never forget, and I hope that this post inspires you to try something new and step out and face your fears.
My wife Audrey and I were on our honeymoon in South Africa. It was an incredible trip, and it is such a beautiful country with so much to offer. We were on the other side of the world, and it was the first time either of us have ever been outside of North America. Fast forward and it is our second to last day of the trip, we are driving down the N2 highway from Port Elizabeth heading back to Cape Town to catch our flight home the next day. Ever since the day I heard about this bungee jump in South Africa, it was something that I could not wait to do but my nerves were racing every which direction.
As we were approaching the bridge, our eyes lit up. The view was incredible, a gigantic white bridge above the Bloukrans River. Bloukrans Bridge is the world’s highest commercial bridge bungee jump at 216 meters (709 feet). We parked the car, pondered around for a little while, did our research on the history of the jump and after a few liquid courage drinks, we decided, “we only live once, we have to go for it.” We went with a company called Face Adrenalin, met with the guides, got the instructions and prepped for our hike towards the bridge. Now I don’t know about you, but we had never bungee jumped in our life and now we were about to take a leap of faith off of the highest jump in the world, my heart was pumping and my stomach was turning.
Before we took off, I checked my blood sugar to make sure that I was good to go. Packed some glucose tablets in my bag just in case, and then went on our way. The hike to the edge of the bridge was quite the adventure itself… it is a see through walkway and the whole time you are pretty much forced to stare at the ground below 700+ feet. Although the walk was only a couple minutes, it seemed like forever and felt like we were floating in the air.
We finally got to the edge, and this bungee company had some brilliant marketing, because they had a big sign on the wall right before the jump that read, “Fear is temporary, Regret lasts forever.” We watched a few others take on their jump for the ultimate safety precaution, and then it was game time. I’ll never forget walking my feet up to the edge… Holy cow the adrenaline rush was one that I don’t think I have ever felt. Then 3,2,1 boom the leap was made.. I felt like a bird soaring through the air. The bungee caught, and I remember screaming in joy. What an experience!
Now I’m not telling you that you have to go bungee jumping by any means, but instead incorporate this quote “Fear is temporary, regret last forever” into your day to day life. It carries such deep meaning and it is so true. How will we ever know what we can do or what we are capable of doing if we do not even give it a try? How do we know that diabetes is defeating us if we do not stand up and take this disease on? We are capable of whatever we want in this world, we just have to step out and do something about it.
